Gravity Sketch 6.0

Product Designer (2022-24)

Gravity Sketch is a 3D design platform that empowers teams to create, collaborate, and review immersive product designs in real time—whether in VR or on desktop—streamlining the creative process from concept to production. I joined Gravity Sketch as a Product Designer in 2022. Over the 2 years I spent there, we changed the look of the app completely, reduced time-to-value for new users by more than 50% and launched experimental features for our die-hard community members all while increasing ARR by 200% to $8 million in 2023.

6.0 was the biggest update to the UX of the app since its launch. The release was aimed at giving designers more intuitive access to the tools they need throughout the journey of their workflow. We, as a design team, worked with UX Researchers, Product Managers and Software Engineers to execute this project.

Although the Gravity Sketch VR app had made significant updates and feature additions since its launch, the overall user experience remained relatively the same. It served its purpose really well but had a few major drawbacks that needed to be addressed. We used the launch of 6.0 to completely rethink the user experience as we head into the next phase of the platform.

Our main goal throughout the entire design process was to allow users to feel the joy of creating and enter a 'flow state'. We updated the design language of the UI elements to give the app a more modern and playful look while maintaining the professional feel of a productivity tool.

We decided to approach the redesign by breaking down the platform into 3 core elements. This allowed us to focus our efforts as a small team and create a a scalable approach to the new user experience.

We added a two-tiered system inside the brush menu by making the basic brushes accessible immediately for casual users and full customisation for advanced users. Taking inspiration from real-world interactions and colour pallette cards used by designers, we redesigned the colour wheel, added a 'pick & paint' feature and materials library.

We wanted to extend the principles and visual language of this redesign to the desktop & web based platforms to create a cohesive ecosystem. Our approach to redesigning LandingPad & Screen Collab was focused on creating a screen-based platform that could empower users without a headset to collaborate more deeply and to share the amazing work they have been creating in Gravity Sketch.
